What are the new features and elements in Transformers 5?
Transformers 5 introduces some new features and elements that make it different from the previous films in the series. Some of these are:
The film is the first in the series to be partially shot with IMAX 3D cameras, which provide a more immersive and realistic viewing experience.
The film is also the first in the series to feature a writers' room, which consisted of several screenwriters and comic book writers who brainstormed ideas for the film and the future of the franchise.
The film incorporates elements from various sources of Transformers lore, such as the Generation 1 cartoon, the comics, the video games, and the animated films. For example, the film features Quintessa, who is based on the Quintessons, a race of alien judges who created the Transformers in some continuities.
The film also expands the mythology of the Transformers by revealing that they have been involved in various historical events and legends, such as King Arthur, Merlin, World War I, World War II, and the Apollo 11 moon landing.
The film also introduces some new types of Transformers, such as Infernocons, who are fiery minions of Quintessa that can combine into a larger beast called Infernocus; Knights of Iacon, who are ancient Transformers that guard Merlin's staff and can transform into a three-headed dragon called Dragonstorm; and Steelbane, who is a knight Transformer that transforms into a mechanical dragon.
Plot Summary
The history of Transformers and the secret of Merlin's staff
The film begins with a flashback to the Dark Ages, where King Arthur and his knights are fighting against the Saxons. Arthur's wizard ally Merlin is actually a drunkard who has no magic powers, but he has befriended a group of Transformers called the Knights of Iacon, who have crashed on Earth. The Knights give Merlin a powerful staff that can control Dragonstorm, a giant three-headed dragon Transformer. With Dragonstorm's help, Arthur and his knights win the battle.
In the present day, most of the Transformers are hunted down by the TRF (Transformers Reaction Force), a global paramilitary organization that sees them as threats. However, some humans still ally with the Transformers, such as Cade Yeager, an inventor who lives in a junkyard with his Autobot friends; Izabella, a teenage orphan who lives in a war-torn city with her robot companion Sqweeks; and Sir Edmund Burton, an astronomer and historian who belongs to a secret society that knows about the history of Transformers on Earth.
The return of Optimus Prime and the threat of Quintessa
Meanwhile, Optimus Prime, who left Earth at the end of the previous film to find his creators, arrives at Cybertron, which is now a dead planet. He is captured by Quintessa, a Cybertronian goddess who claims to be his creator. She tells him that Cybertron can be restored by draining the life force of Earth, which is actually Unicron, an ancient enemy of Cybertron. She also tells him that he must retrieve Merlin's staff, which is hidden on Earth. She brainwashes him and renames him Nemesis Prime.
On Earth, Megatron, the leader of the Decepticons, also learns about Merlin's staff from one of his human collaborators. He negotiates with the TRF to release some of his De cepticon allies, such as Barricade, Onslaught, Dreadbot, Mohawk, and Nitro Zeus. He then leads them to find the staff.
The alliance of Cade, Vivian, and Sir Edmund Burton
Cade Yeager is contacted by a dying Transformer knight who gives him a talisman that can lead him to the staff. He is also visited by a Transformer messenger named Cogman, who invites him to England to meet Sir Edmund Burton. Cade travels to England with Bumblebee, an Autobot scout and his best friend, and Hound, an Autobot commando. There, he meets Burton and Vivian Wembley, a professor of English literature at Oxford University who is revealed to be a descendant of Merlin. Burton explains that they are the only ones who can stop Quintessa from destroying Earth, as Cade is the last knight of the Witwiccan order and Vivian is the only one who can wield Merlin's staff.
They also learn that the staff is hidden in a Cybertronian spacecraft that is submerged under Stonehenge, which is actually a portal to Unicron's horns. They decide to go there with the help of Cogman, Hot Rod, an Autobot scout and brother-in-arms of Bumblebee, and several other Autobots. However, they are pursued by the TRF, Megatron and his Decepticons, and Nemesis Prime, who has arrived on Earth under Quintessa's orders.
