El Inolvidable Simon Birch es una pelÃcula de 1998 dirigida por Mark Steven Johnson y basada en la novela A Prayer for Owen Meany de John Irving. Simon and Joe's friendship is tested by several events, such as the arrival of Ben, who becomes a father figure for Joe and a friend for Simon; the death of Rebecca, who is accidentally killed by Simon's foul ball during a baseball game; and the discovery of Joe's father's identity, which involves a shocking revelation. Simon also faces bullying and discrimination from his peers and his parents, who do not appreciate his intelligence and his faith. Simon believes that God has a special plan for him and that he will be a hero someday.
The climax of the film occurs when Simon and Joe join a group of children on a school bus trip to a Christmas pageant. On the way back, the bus driver suffers a heart attack and loses control of the vehicle, which plunges into a frozen lake. Simon manages to save all the children by breaking a window and leading them to safety. However, he is trapped under the ice and drowns. Joe tries to rescue him, but it is too late. Simon dies in Joe's arms, fulfilling his destiny as a hero.
The film ends with Joe as an adult, visiting Simon's grave and remembering their friendship. He reveals that he has found his father, who turned out to be the reverend Russell, and that he has forgiven him for abandoning him and his mother.
